It has become so popular because it is easy to use and completely customisable, you can grow your website when and as you need to. You can add more pages, more articles, more functions and capabilities without knowing any code.

So, what is WordPress exactly?

WordPress is a content management system (CMS). A content management system is basically software that helps users create, manage, and modify content on a website. The software doesn’t cost anything, it runs online, you don’t need to install anything onto your computers. Anyone can install, use, and modify it for free.

WordPress has been around since 2003 and has been growing ever since, regularly upgrading and improving the system. In the beginning, WordPress was mainly used to create blogs but now it is sophisticated enough to run e-commerce stores, mobile apps and membership/learning sites.

WordPress was built for non-techie people, You don’t need any coding knowledge or any other skills in order to use your website.

Why your business needs a website rather than a facebook page

Why your business needs a website rather than a facebook page

Why do I need a website if I have a Facebook page?

Facebook business pages are a popular option for business owners because they’re free, and they understand the system as they use Facebook in their personal lives.

However, now it is more important than ever to have a professional business website.

You can think of social media as your marketing department and your website as your sales department. Your business website should be the home for all your business information and digital content.

Social media is pretty saturated with content. Cat photos, food porn, advertising, advertising, advertising. People generally graze or skim over their screens.

If your business only uses Facebook, your information is scattered around in posts, photos, in a grid, where people pick and choose what they want to see. People can like and comment on posts, but you’re not in control of everything within your social pages.

What happens when these networks shut down, hacked, start charging, or lose popularity? Plus, not everyone is using these social networks, you need to gauge who your target market is.

With your own business website, you own and control your content. You can set out all your business information in a clear and logical way. Set out your terms of business and how you interact with your customers. You can add additional functions like quotation requests, price lists and appointment booking, which can save you time in your sales process.

Think of your business marketing like a wheel with a hub and spokes. Your website is the hub and the spokes are all the things you do to market your business, like Facebook, directory listings, advertising, signage. They all lead into the hub, your website, or your digital shopfront.

Having a business website allows you to use Google Analytics which provides a wealth of information about your customers. You can’t do this with Facebook.

So, can a Facebook business page replace a website?

Not in my opinion, but they can work together as an online marketing tool to help you interact with customers and raise awareness.

How to choose a domain name

How to choose a domain name

What is a domain name?

A domain name, put simply, is the address of your website. The domain name is the www. bit people type into their browser to find your business. You can’t have a website without a domain name.

Should I have a .com?

The .com extension on the end of a domain name refers to the type of entity your business is. .com is intended for commercial entities in the United States. Nowadays, it is regularly used for international online businesses. If you are a local business or service in Australia .com.au is your best choice. There are alternatives such as .net.au if .com.au is unavailable.

There are a raft of other options fresh to the market such as .studio, .co, .tech, .store. These could be an option for you too.

How do I choose a domain name?

If you already have an established business choosing a name should be easy. You should use your business name so it’s recognisable as your business, or something as similar as possible. If your business name has been taken you could add your location or industry/service to the phrase.

Quick tips on choosing a domain name

  • Keep it short, simple, predictable
  • Make it easy to say, spell out and pronounce
  • Avoid hyphens, numbers and double letters
  • Make it unique and brand-able
  • See if the social media handles of the same name are available

How to choose a domain name for a new business

It’s important to put some thought into your new domain and business name. It can make or break your business, plus it is a bit of a hassle to change afterwards.

Take in the tips above and also consider the following:

  • use keywords in your domain search
  • leave room to expand
  • do your research
  • use a domain name generator for ideas
  • don’t infringe on other trademarks

What is a domain name generator?

Artificial intelligence is used to come up with a variety of options based on the keywords available. They can also let you know if the domain name is available and if not, provide alternatives. nameboy.com is an option but there are many others, like crazydomains.com.au.

Next steps

Once you’ve decided on a domain name you will need to buy hosting. Hosting essentially is a storage space on a server that holds your website information.

I recommend buying your domain name and hosting together as usually you’ll get your domain name for free.

If you choose to use my “Simple Business Website Package”, I do all of this for you. Your domain name and hosting is included for two years. After that you can continue with the same company, or change.
